OUR APPROACH TO MUSIC EDUCATION

Imagine leaving your music lesson smiling, upbeat, and actually wanting to practice. Sound like it’s too good to be true? Not at our studio.

There’s the conservatory approach. The rock band approach. And the kiddie approach.

Then there’s the ATL Music Lessons approach.

Modern music education for the everyday music lover. We lead with fun while taking on a non-fluffy approach to teaching music.

DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

Your child is squirming at the piano, counting down the minutes until their lesson ends | Their music instructor seems to think your child is being ‘bad’ and not paying attention during lessons, but really, they’re acting out due to anxiety. After all, their every move is being watched. They won’t sit still and they want it to end.

Practicing seems to be a chore and constant battle | When your child’s music lesson is over, they spring up from the piano or guitar, and never revisit it without being supervised. You’ve got a lot going on and needing to constantly watch them just to make sure they’re practicing is getting old.

Dealing with your current music studio feels like time-travel back to pre-internet times | Every time you think of communicating with your child’s music lessons studio, you get a bout of anxiety, because you might have to jump through a million hoops to get what you need or even ask a question. Everything is done manually and super slow.

The teacher is very skilled but really harsh on your kid | You definitely want your child to ‘stick to it’ and have a sense of commitment, even when it gets tough, but the music instructor is coming down really hard on them. You can tell it’s making your child feel even worse every time. They dread their lessons and you desperately want them to love learning music.

You want your kid to learn music, but you’re worried they feel isolated and wonder if sports will be better for socialization and team work | Kids have so many activities these days, but you know the importance of learning music. However, you also see the value in teamwork and camaraderie. You wish that there could be an in-between so your child didn’t have to play music alone, but you haven’t quite found it yet.

We get it. And we’re not interested in that brand of music education.

We’re in the business of developing everyday music lovers into lifelong musicians, using sustainable and modern methods.

AND THAT’S WHY WE TEACH GROUP PIANO & GUITAR LESSONS.

The benefits are clear. When your child plays music in a group setting, here’s what happens:

Fun, social environment | when your child plays in a group setting, they experience a sense of belonging, teamwork, and camaraderie. We love building community and friendships outside of school and sports.

Self-directed learning | When your child is empowered to learn independently, their confidence and empathy will grow. They will learn new skills on their own and experience the creativity, self-expression, and experimentation that comes with this mindset.

Combination of technology and classic methods | We embrace the fun and gamification that comes from video games without overdoing it on screen time.

Friendly competition | when your child sees others ahead of them and behind them, they’ll feel inspired by those that are further along and proud to help those a few steps behind. The opportunities for leadership and teaching others will naturally present themselves. Friendly competition is a great motivator.

Balanced Teacher Guidance | We’re not into helicopter teaching, because no one enjoys someone constantly watching their every move over the shoulder. This approach means a more relaxed environment, with less anxiety and frustration.

Sharing Opportunities | Playing in front of others can sometimes be nerve wracking. In each session, your child will share their progress with the class; a great way to increase confidence and reduce performance anxiety over time. When recitals roll around, they’ll feel eager and excited to show their progress, because they’ve been flexing that performance muscle the whole time (without even realizing it).

  • We currently have two studio locations serving the Atlanta metro area. Our flagship location is steps away from Decatur Square, a great place for parents to walk around and run some errands while the kids are having their lesson, and our brand new Hapeville location is now open for students on the south side.

If you’re located somewhere in between, we’d be happy to tell you more about each studio and discuss which would be the best for you.

  • While many of our longstanding students are still taking private lessons in their homes, we are discontinuing in-home lessons for new students. Group lessons have proven to be incredibly effective and very popular with our current families. Therefore, we will actively continue to encourage students to join us in the studio for group lessons.

  • Lucky for you, we’re fully equipped with beautiful keyboards in the studio. We are working on stocking the guitar room with guitars as well (coming soon).

As for your practice time at home, we’re happy to make recommendations! We even have a resources page with all of our favorite learning materials and gear listed. Though it is not 100% necessary, we strongly recommend that you have your own instrument ready to go for the first lesson.

  • For most students, we strongly recommend our group piano and guitar lessons. We recognize that there might be times when group lessons are not suitable for a student, so we welcome special requests about private in-studio lessons if you truly believe it would be best for your child. Of course, we encourage you to first try group lessons for at least a month and speak with our studio director before making that request.

  • We do! We organize at least two performance opportunities each year, and even held our first virtual recital in December 2020. Typically we do one at the beginning of summer and one around the holidays. As our studio community continues to grow we plan to hold additional informal events throughout the year.

WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING

  • Priya's Parents Say...

“Aaron at ATL Music Lessons has been teaching our 6 year old daughter piano for the last couple of years. He is wonderful with her and she really looks forward to her weekly lesson. She's gone from not being able to read a single note to performing some of her favorite Disney songs in front of friends and family. We're so happy with how hard she's worked and how far she's come!”

  • Sean and Dean's Parents Say...

"They started not knowing how to play an instrument and now it seems like there's always music being played in our house. They even learned to play some of their dad's favorite songs! I am so happy with the progress my children are making.

  • Lila's Parents Say....

“Lila has really excelled at the piano. She started playing on her own, so we decided to get her lessons. We’re so glad we did. We were able to take the stickers off the keys since her note reading has gotten so much better. She’s already playing her favorite songs and practices so much that we sometimes need to ask her to stop when we have Zoom meetings for work. We’re happy we signed up with ATLML.”
